Our TeamMark S. Slaughter, M.D.Mark Slaughter, MD currently serves as the Director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Assist Device Program at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois. He originally graduated form Purdue University with a degree in engineering but decided to follow in his father’s and brother’s footsteps and went on to medical school at Indiana University. From there he did his general surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and cardiothoracic training at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Slaughter subsequently returned to Chicago and Advocate Christ Medical Center. In addition to developing the LVAD and transplant program, he started and directs the Cardiac Surgery Clinical Research Center. The research center has had a special focus on acute and chronic myocardial physiology during LVAD support and has participated in over 30 national clinical device trials. Mark has published over 40 articles, several book chapters and just this year authored a book on cardiac surgery in chronic renal failure. He also enjoys mentoring each of his medical, perfusion, physician assistant and biomedical engineering students by inviting them to actively participate in a typical day in the life of a cardiac surgeon. Despite his busy clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Slaughter still finds time for outside activities. Since 2001 he has climbed Mt. Shasta in California and Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, and enjoys playing and competing in local and regional tennis tournaments. The list of all Dr. Slaughter has achieved is lengthy, but he is most proud of his family. His wife Martha is the pillar of support for all his endeavors, and he views his children as his three greatest achievements. |

Michael A. Sobieski II, RN, CCPMichael A. Sobieski, RN, CCP has more than 15 years of experience as a perfusionist and nearly 25 years of experience in cardiac care. Mr. Sobieski is currently the President and CEO of Cardiac Assist Consultants, LLC, in Highland, Indiana, as well as the Biomedical Device Support Director and Coordinator of Clinical Perfusion for Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ilinois. He is also a coordinator of research studies at Cardiac Surgery Clinical Research Center, Inc., also in Oak Lawn. After studying at Loyola University, Mr. Sobieski received his A.S. in Nursing in 1983 and subsequently followed up with further studies at Illinois Benedictine College. While working as a staff nurse in the Surgical Heart Unit at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, Mr. Sobieski became interested in perfusion technology. After becoming a licensed perfusionist, he worked at Cardiovascular-Renal Consultants in Blue Island, Illinois, then moving on in 1991 to Perfusion Technologist of Great Chicago, Inc., where he is the current vice-president and a practicing perfusionist. Always one to place a high value on education, Mr. Sobieski is currently working on his B.S./M.B.A. at Lewis Univeristy. Mr. Sobieski has collaborated on several clinical trials and has co-authored an extensive list of articles, abstracts, book chapters, and presentations with Dr. Slaughter. His extensive clinical and research work have made him a much-demanded invited lecturer on perfusion and LVAD technologies. Mr. Sobieski juggles several roles, from clinical profusionist and researcher to student and executive. But his favorite roles are that of spouse and father of five. He, his wife, and children reside in Munster, Indiana. |
